STATEMENT

Matthew 5:14-16 "14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Moses 2:3 "And I, God, said: Let there be light; and there was light. And I, God, saw the light; and that light was good. And I, God, divided the light from the darkness"

The concept for this painting was communicated to me through a dream. A dream that would not let me sleep for two nights until I started painting it. As I was searching for the message of this painting I read a post by Caitlin Conolly about light not being white the way we perceive it to be, but actually being a rainbow when broken down into visible wavelengths. This concept is where I felt the significance of this piece. I decided to make the halo of light a rainbow to merge the concept of holiness with the symbol for the LGBT+ Community.

Our LGBT+ friends have a special kind of light about them. A special kind of love. Christ loves his LGBT+ siblings, not despite the fact that they are LGBT+, but because of it. Because they are individuals intentionally created with their individual, unique, GOOD light. They deserve a world in which they feel safe to let that light shine

What I love about this painting is the way Christ is enjoying the presence of the LGBT+ person he is sitting with. He is the one laughing and feeling joy because of their presence. He is benefitting from their existence. His love for them is tangible. I know the light of the LGBT+ community is not always safe in our world or in our pews, but it is safe with Christ.
